Henryk Wróbel sits in his red-brick familok in Zabrze, looking at two brochures on the table. He loves his old coal stove, but the region's clean-air rules say he must replace it. He has to choose between a heat pump and a gas stove. He prefers to fix things himself, but this is hard. He enjoys reading, so he reads both brochures twice. He likes to think carefully.
He thinks about his allotment garden ten minutes away, where he grows tomatoes, carrots, and cabbages. He gives most of them to neighbours, but he likes growing them. While he works there, he enjoys singing old miners’ songs. He also likes racing his thirty pigeons in the loft. He even helps his Spanish neighbour learn Polish. He says, 'In the mine we had a rule: always think twice before you act.'
Henryk does not want to move to a modern flat, even though his daughter suggests it. He will always be fond of his old house and his ways. He likes collecting things, especially old tools from the mine, and keeps them in a box. He likes doing DIY. His knees are too stiff for running, but they are fine for fixing a door. He will decide soon, but he wants to choose carefully.
